The historic use of pipes to smoke tobacco goes back a couple thousand years to about 500 B.C. The American Indians introduced tobacco pipes to the Europeans around 1550, and its use spread quickly.

Tobacco pipes have been made from all sorts of material, but  most commonly were carved from briar wood. Since the smoking pipe was first introduced to the Europeans, pipes have been made of oak, mesquite, cherry wood, corncobs, and clay.

Glass pipes are not well suited for smoking but some people do use them.

A pipe consists of two parts; the bowl for burning the tobacco and a hollow stem that allows the smoke to be pulled into the mouth.
